What to Eat for Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a special type of disorder that develops inside the digestion system that can rapidly cause dehydration which is extremely dangerous in most cases. The key signs of the diarrhea include dry mouth and skin, excessive thirst, severe weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness, little or no urination. The main causes of diarrhea can be bacteria (contaminated food or water), viruses (rotavirus and adenovirus), medication (antibiotics), food intolerances and allergies, parasites (giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium).

In case of acute diarrhea, the human body itself will utilize self-cleansing mechanism that will eliminate an irritant. But if the diarrhea is chronic or it is persisting more than a weak causing various health problems, then there is a special diet-treatment which includes several steps and procedures such as:
- The patient must consume only easy-to-digest foods and avoid those that cause cramping, discomfort or gas. Specifically, from the drinks: caffeine, alcohol, acidic fruit juices (apple, orange grapefruit), carbonated drinks and from the foods: chocolate, greasy and spicy foods (black pepper, chilli), gaseous vegetables (onions, cabbage, broccoli, corn) should strictly be avoided form consumption.
- The food must be eaten in smaller amount but more frequently with evenly spaced throughout the day to ensure that the stomach acidity will be reduced. It is better if the food is eaten slowly and chewed properly.
- Preferably bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast need to be consumed. This is known as BRAT diet.
- Patient must start drinking clear water at room temperature and slowly add light foods in small amounts such as cream of wheat prepared with water or oatmeal, dry cereal (made with water), plain rice, crackers, gingersnaps, plain toast, mashed potato (no skin), ripe bananas, chicken soup and applesauce.
